Does anyone have any idea if the foam used for flotation in the R22 has a
service life? Does it require replacement after many years? Has the
formulation changed over the years?

When I worked on the cockpit floor of my '84, a few sections of the original
foam had to be removed, temporarily to expose the bottom of the floor, and
it appeared to be quite rigid and stable, even where it had encountered a
fair amount of water over time. I was suitably impressed with the condition
of the foam, although I have no idea if the flotation characteristics have
changed.
