Robert,
I should have realized that Ed's attempts at put-downs had their origins in some sort of primitive baboonish behavior. That makes a lot of sense.
I was going to attribute it to junior high mine-is-bigger-than-your's juvenile nonsense. But that would be an insult to junior high kids everywhere.

Mark, I think it's a power thing. Anthropologically, it
is referred to as "ritual mounting", and is a behavior
often exhibited by dogs. It has few, if any, sexual
connotations. It is about dominance.

"... Now, those baboons just engage in 'ritual mounting'
as a sign of domination, or so they say, but I think I
know a lot of guys who would be uncomfortable if their
boss jammed his pelvis against their ass..."

"Another aspect of Kwanzaa and its treatment by the
establishment, esp. the press, is what it says about
the power arraingment in this country. For decades
Kwanzaa was a nothing holiday celebrated almost
exclusively by the white liberals who control the
mass-media. They understood the nature of the holiday,
and understood the irritation it would cause to people.
The open embracing with impunity of a holiday that is
completely against their alleged principles is a
purposeful slap in the face of their subjects, a ritual
mounting to demonstrate their power over their victims.
I can flaunt the rules and there is nothing you can do
about it but grin and shuffle. This is the way ruling
classes are, it's not enough just to rule, they must be
seen to dominate, for the emotional satisfaction it
gives and as a tool to intimidate any potential
opposition."
And, from one of my favorite authors:
http://harlanellison.com/heboard/archive/unca20060807.htm
"Hell, it isn't even a man-woman thing. Leonid Brezhnev
loved to hug and paw our President Nixon, mostly because
he knew Nixon hated to be touched and would be too
concerned with diplomacy to make an issue of it. In the
body language of monkeys and dogs, it was a ritual
mounting. It said, 'I am a bigger dog than you, so you
have to sit and take it.'"
I leave it to Ed to explain why he feels the need to
dominate other list members.
