Rummy,
I know it works when the 175 is in the normal places.
But what happens when you jury rig the sail so it comes straight down
the center of the deck? Does it fill out to leeward and block the air
that wants to go over the main sail when pointing?
My point is that the cut of the sail when extended only as far back as
the mast may not put enough sail high enough to block the slot.
The new battened mainsail certainly improves pointing ability, and you
wouldn't want to do anything that hurts the aerodynamics of that sail in
a pointing situation.
