Pete,
Welcome to the wonderful world of boating. Whatever can possibly go wrong, will at the worst possible moment. These are the times you can look back on several years from now and get a good chuckle out of your trials and tribulations.

  Peter,
Welcome. There is at least one person who maybe can help you.
However, you failed to tell where you are. That piece of information
  just
  might be helpful.
  Did you see this post?
  http://www.rhodes22.org/pipermail/rhodes22-list/2006-February/028606.html
  Is that your boat?
Does that reference say it was made by General Boats? Hum, could it
  be this company?

Does the boat in the pictures resemble your boat? Hum, makes you
  wonder. Did you know that
Commodore Stan Spitzer makes the Rhodes 22? Now Stan is a young
  fellow, however, he just
may know something about your boat. Just maybe he can direct you to
  some answers to your
questions. Remember, his time is very valuable. There are several on
this list waiting for him to
  make them new boats.
  Good Luck

Thanx Ed K. I had called Stan during the summer `05 about another
probblem with the 17, and yes he remembered it. I didnt have all the
mast stays and had to have some made locally which is Staten Island
NY. I had the stays made in NJ. and the next week I lost the keel.
Picture if you can the 17 with the mast up, no boom attached ,no
sail, with a 3 horse motor out in a protected area of water, my wife
and myself eating lunch like we were on a 40 ft sailboat. great fun
till I came to the realization the the plug was not watertight. No
one had explained that a metal sleeve was needed. The boat was free
and well hopefully this season will go smoother. Pete
