Don't know if this will help but we chose our fishfinder/depth based on the 
fact that one of the displays you can choose has a very large depth 
readout. The display is mounted on a bracket on the aft cabin wall facing 
the cockpit and is easily readable from anywhere in the cockpit. Go to a 
marine store and eyeball the displays from various distances. In the hi res 
version of the pic I've attached not only can you see the depth display on 
the port side but you can almost read the numbers. We have an old handheld 
GPS that we pass around the cockpit depending on who needs to see it. We do 
that with charts too so it doesn't seem to be an inconvenience.
