Yes, hydraulic jacks in the shape of a bottle -- available from Northern
Tool/Home Depot/ etc. $15 and up. It's hard to get a bad one. More
capacity for bigger jacks. Average throw on the piston is 6-12 inches.
Screw on top of piston allows you to use the jack in a variety of
situations. I don't like to extend the piston to it's maximum throw
with this much weight on it--I brace and reposition after 2-3 inches for
safety's sake.

PS -- I'm using one of these things in a horizontal jig to split wood.
10 Ton jack. Highly satisfactory.
