The lake water is warming a bit, but will not be really
enjoyable until August, and then only above the
thermocline without a wet suit.
We had very little ice this last winter. Several ice
fishing tournaments had to be canceled for safety
reasons, and we had more than the usual number of auto
and snowmobile sinkings. Some snowmobilers persist in
thinking that if they get going fast enough (70-90 mph),
they can cross open water. Some make it, many don't.
The Maine Department of Environmental Protection is now
fining ($5,000-25,000+) people who drive their vehicles
onto ice and go through.
The open ocean is never warm, of course. Even in the
summer, you need a survival suit of you go overboard.
But the sailing in the Gulf of Maine is some of the
best in the world! Y'all come up, now...
