Tom,
Welcome to the Rhodes list, sort of. Where are you? On the subject
of the eBay Rhodes 22, you told us that you know what a Tiller is for, but
failed to describe your aptitude and willingness to refinish a tiller. This
has a bearing on considering a used boat.
A reason for the interest on this list and elsewhere for eBay used
Rhodes is that sellers of such boats either are not aware of this email list
or are deliberately avoiding us. Some of the people on this list are
lurkers, just seeing what they can learn. Others are lookers and newbies
who want a Rhodes 22 and have not made a plunge. While most yakers, but
certainly not all, are experienced Rhodies.
Used Rhodes in any condition are hard to find. And, to add to your
confusion, new Rhodes are still being made by the same guy who made the
first ones. Have you thoroughly investigated http://www.rhodes22.com ?
A Rhodes 22 with a marine head for the Admiral, in good shape and ready
to sail, will be expensive in any port. With those requirements, I strongly
urge you to have a heart to pocket discussion with Commodore Stanley
Spitzer. The best time to have such a call is late in the day, or on the
weekend when he is not working on somebody else's dream.
This approach while expensive is in my opinion the best way unless
you love a project boat and just are happy rebuilding a sailboat. Any used
boat from anybody but the Commodore may really be a project boat
notwithstanding whatever they tell you.
Again, welcome aboard. This list is kept active by the non sailing
discussions that predominate, but if you have a specific question, it is up
to you to post it. As you may notice, the word enlightenment has certain
allusions to members of the liberal media from the big apple and its
environs.
