Rory,
Like Rummy said, that is a strange looking set-up. Maybe I should be
directing these inquiries to Stan but, is that how it came from GB or is
that an owner mod? Is this a design change for future Rhodes 22 rudders,
forced by the shortage of strap type pintles that can span the 2 1/2"
rudder casing?
Rory one suggestion for a repair would be to cut the turning tube thingy
down so it would fit between the rudderhead cheeks and through bolt
through the middle of the tube. You could even put a doughnut of
starboard plastic around the tube and it could actually double as the
down stop. It may work, but is just a suggestion.....having not seen the
rudder first-hand. See attached

of course the red rudder line was meant to be on the bow side of
the turning bar, not behind it.
the turning bar was meant to be mounted to the bottom of the rudder
head so that the down blade comes to stop by meeting the filler
spacer between the rudder cheeks and not by hitting against this
little turning bar and using this bar as its downside stop. It
apparently had been mounted too far aft. You can get the red
downhaul line to do what it was intended to do by having an angle
on the bottom side of the rudder cheeks spacer piece so the angle
allows the double line to be fed forward and around the bow sid e of
the turning bar before its two ends turn back to terminate in the
two holes on the leading edge of the rudder blade.
