If you are going forward either under sail or with sails furled, there are  
plenty of things to hold on to without the rails. I use the genoa sheets as 
well  as the stays. My biggest worry is tripping over something with my feet. 
Alcohol  has a tendency to make quick foot action near impossible without 
stubbing a toe  or two along the way.
