[Rhodes22-list] Cell Phone Triangulation

Bill,
I use Verizon Wireless. In addition to GPS, they supposedly use cell tower
triangulation for the VZNAV product (Networks in Motion is the provider of
the software) when GPS signals are not reliable and cell tower locations are
well documented such as in urban areas.
In November 2006, Boat US says that the *CG cell phone service is being
discontinued:

There was an article in 2000 in Boat US discussing VHF radio vs cell phones:

I still think that the VHF radio is a better emergency system since you have
a good chance that more than one party may respond to your call and a boater
may actually be closer than the nearest CG boat, especially with the planned
staff reductions. I will continue to carry my cell phone and maintain a
functioning VHF.

consider the Rhodes 22 for your boat. Hands down a superb choice. On the
VHF, if you do not have one already, I'd choose the one with emergency GPS
position transmission capability, and a handheld GPS as a minimum. Lake or
open water, I'd get a depth reader of some kind. Stan can make integral
with the hull, sealed properly, and I wouldn't miss that. The boat will
probably have Stan's engine hoist. Saves alot of wear and tear on you,
especially if you opt for 8 or 9.9, 4 stroke - a heavy beast!

installation and a depth gauge. In contrast to Rummy, the wind in the sails
are the only music I need.
