[Rhodes22-list] Gelcoat Cracking under Solar Collector

In replacing my 13 year old solar collector mounted on the cabin roof,
I found the gelocoat under the old collector looks like dried mud flats. 
Any ideas on what caused the cracking? 
I'm thinking of painting the
affected area to seal the cracks.
