Elle,
   Check out Exchange Traded Funds.  There are tax exempt funds.  They increase in value (and decline) pay a dividend (some monthly) and trade like stocks.  There are some that are very stable.  Leave it there until it grows to the correct amount for the endowment.  Of course, I would seek out professional legal advise as to how to set it up, but that may be an option.  You can find out about these funds on ETFConnect.com.  I don't know if that is viable but you can try.
