Bill, Rummy, Joe, Anne -- thanks for all the advice ... this is very helpful. So I guess there's never really a need for sailing in some sort of watertight clothing or a wetsuit unless I'm sailing around the Horn or something ...

Joe, I'll be sailing mostly around the Wilson Bridge area and south of Old Town Alexandria ... we dock at the Washington Sailing Marina.

Well so far the Potomac is still warmer than the air temps
(we found out the hard way the past two weekends) Wife
tested the waters last weekend, and I confirmed it this
past weekend.

I dress like I'm gonna get back in the boat ASAP, and would
like to get dry even faster. So I have an under layer of
under armor which wicks moisture away, and seems to dry
quickly - Once you're wet and out of the water it's just as
if not more dangerous, you'll have a nice cool wind to
thank for that. I also wore my Poly-pro middle layer (got
it at Army/Navy/Camping store can alos try REI, HTO -
cheaper than sailing specality sotre). Sometime I wear a
gortex cycling jacket (light weight, flexable).

For the pants, I had on a pair of nylon warmups - the
advantage of these was they are open at the bottom, and
also have zippers, so you can remove over your boat shoes
if necessary - also more important is they do NOT fill with
water and act as an anchor!

I use the Loyd's Harbor stuff for larger boats. Doing the
Potomac in a Flying Scott I need to more around a little
more.

The bottom line is get what you like, but stay far far away
from natural materials like cotton, once wet they get
hevay, and staty wet .. My cheap nylon warmup pants were
were dry enough for us to get a warm me up drink and lunch
after securing the boat. I did change my top layer and put
on my emergency sweatshirt ... another good idea I think is
to bring FLEACE clothing as a change - it will keep you dry
and warm you up until you get back to the dock.

We like to wait until we get back to the dock to take our
dip :-)

have fun, and see you on the River

BTW, where abouts on the Patomac will you be sailing?

joe a.k.a. ...
