Jim,
You know you are getting old when equipment you used as "new" or saw as
"in development" is now in the museums on the posts you visit.

If it is the one I saw before, it is the three maneuvering room control
panels (steam turbine reactor and electric plant) from a submarine. The old
TV and teletype were photoshopped in. The old guy may or may not have also
been photoshopped in.

Not sure of origin. Photos of this sort were classified (likely secret)
into the 1990's. They may not be now as all the ships that used this exact
reactor are decommissioned.

Parts of my old boat were (maybe still are) in the Smithsonian for the 100th
anniversary of the submarine in US Navy in 2002.

No, it never appeared in the 1954 Popular Mechanics. It's a photoshop job
of, as I remember it, but haven't checked, a trade show mock up of a
submarine with an old monitor thrown in--or something like that.

In any event, it never was in Popular Mechanics, it's a composite, and it
was not a picture of a computer, or what it was thought a computer would
look like. The one you saw on the high school trip was what they looked
like at that time--with high speed tape drives, and tapes that spilled off
the reels.
