[Rhodes22-list] Dorade replacement was:Opening ports

Solar vent fit into the existing opening without modification. There are
two sizes. IIRC 3" AND 4" One fits just fine (it was 3 years ago, not sure
which). I think I measured dorade with a tape measure. Fits snug, and
dorade can go back at any time.

I removed the drawer and keep the rode flaked in a tote in the lazaretto.
Anchor is there too, tied with a strap and buckle to a fiberglass loop that
was probably installed to lift the hull out of the mold. Anchor stays snug
and doesn't shift much sailing or driving down the road. Dorade and drawer
reside in my basement.

I seldom anchor. Smell was not a consideration. I was looking for improved
ventilation.

Jim,

  1) How do you store your anchor rode? Did the boat smell when you stored
it w/in the boat? Or did you seal off the little shelf in the v-berth?
  2) Did the solar vent fit w/in the opening or did you have to adjust?

Regarding ventilation, I also replaced the plastic hawse pipe/dorade on
the bow with a solar powered mushroom vent fan.

I have opening ports in the cabin front. When it rains, they hold water
(some even with the canvas snap-on covers). If you don't swab them out
before opening, they can empty into the cabin (on the v-berth). Looks to me
like the reason they hold water is the little drain slots aren't steep
enough for the slope of the cabin front. Mine don't leak with them dogged
shut.

Having said that, I value the ventilation they provide. I have no top
hatches on my boat. I sail in New England so may need less ventilation than
some.

I have no experience with the side opening ports, but since the cabin sides
are more vertical, it seems to me that they would drain better there than on
the front.

Bill D and Ed,

Ed, you're right, I am a rookie. I am basing my comment on the opening ports
on Sir Stan's advice and the reason (He said) he changed to non-opening
ports; they leak. If leaking is not an issue (those on the loaner boat I
have right now don't seem to be but I haven't had it that
long) then I would ask Stan again for opening hatches. Overhead hatches may
leak, but Stan didn't advise against them and He never said they leak As for
the head, we had discussions not long ago about various heads and it
probably has more to do with where and on what body of water your boat will
reside as well as how long you would stay on it, regulations (check the
archives). Some of the guys had some interesting information as to the EPA
laws for lakes in some states and inland waterways. I have a porta-pottie
and don't like it. Some of the folks on the list seem to like it fine.

Bill D.

Welcome to the Rhodes List.

When you see the name Bill you have to look to see if it is Bill E or Bill W
or Bill D. Do not be offened by the diatribe of the left wingers on this
list. Just say, the list is working.

It is safe to disregard Philip's statement about opening ports just because
of a few drops of water. Just ask Stan to make you snap on covers.
The covers will keep out most of the rain. What is left is insignificant or
can be simply wiped with a towel before you open them. And keep in mind that
Philip is still a rookie.

Again, welcome to the center of all knowledge, boat and otherwise.
We have several resident gurus on alcolhic beverages and songs to go with
them.
