[Rhodes22-list] Chet: Learn to Sail

Peter,
I'm between Creedmoor and Oxford. I expect that Kerr Lake will be my water of choice. It's about 30 minutes to the boat ramp. Falls Lake and Beaver Dam Lake are a bit closer, but Kerr is bigger.

Chet,
For learning to sail, I think small boats are best. The smaller, the
better. On a very small boat with tiller in one hand and a sheet in the
other, you more easily can feel when you are doing it right or wrong. It's
a matter of responsiveness. This is one area where bigger is not really
better, and IMHO a R22 is too heavy for fast learning.
If you are near Greensboro, NC the Lake Townsend Yacht Club operates a
sailing school on the city's water supply there. They use Sunfish type
boats (Phantoms?) and have a few 14' sloops. All are subsidized by the city
to help the public learn sailing.. Google LTYC. The instructors use both
classroom time and time on the water. One student per boat and instructors
with bullhorns. Membership is subsidized by the city and is about $50/year.
The lessons are also comparably priced.
Where are you in NC? I am in Chapel Hill, but haven't had much time for
sailing recently.

Bob,
I had been intending to teach myself the basics by reading books and
practicing on uncrowded lakes during the off season. However, several folks
on this list advocate lessons, so I'm considering it. Your website says that
your "convenient" Midwest location is in St. Louis, Missouri. I'm in North
Carolina. I think I'll look around for something a little closer to home.
Thanks.
Chet

Hi Chet, Yes Ed I am awake, barely. It has been a rough couple of weeks
supplying Budweiser to all the fans of The WORLD CHAMPION St. Louis
CARDINALS !!!!!!. Enough about my paying job, as a side interest I am an
American Sailing Assoc. Instructor. Needless to say I believe in the value
of the class. In my 4 day class I teach what probably took 10 years of
trial and error to learn. If I had had such a class 30 years ago I would be
a much better sailor today. Bob
