[Rhodes22-list] Ernesto does a number on hatch cover

Rory, right before Hurricane Isabel hit in Sept 2003, someone posted a URL
(if I remember correctly... or possibly copied it into the email) on how to
prepare a boat for a hurricane... it is worth revisiting. It helped me a
lot in my preparation for Isabel... Previously I had been on a Moorings
charter while sailing around Grenada when a tropical storm was predicted; so
I had already been through the drill... you might want to check it out...
the most notable thing I noticed when I saw your posted picture was that
your boat was not well-prepared... the boom should have been removed; the
mast lowered; all "loose" items from topside removed or well-tied down.

My Rhodes is much older than yours and was refurbished much earlier. I have
a different setup apparently for my poptop... it is locked into the lifting
bars so I can't see how it could be pulled up by the wind (at least without
pulling out the lift bars themselves)... however had your mast been down it
seems it would have prevented the poptop from being lifted up.

My Rhodes went through Isabel (which was on a much bigger scale) with no
damage at all. Nor did I have any damage during Ernesto which hit pretty
hard here in Hampton Roads (although nothing like Isabel).

In the Granada situation, we were on a boat in which the mast couldn't be
lowered (a much larger boat); however all lines were removed where possible
and well-secured; the sails removed; the boom detached from the topping lift
and very well secured.

Question: have you thought through what would happen if a storm surge
"floated" your boat off the boat lift? Again, in Isabel, boats that were too
tightly tied down actually lifted the pilings out causing a lot of damage to
the docks and other boats as the boats in question were pushed into the
others. I don't know anything about boat lifts, but the thought occurred to
me.

The only thing one knows for sure about storms is that they are
unpredictable... neither Ernesto or Isabel, for that matter, were expected
to be as severe as they turned out to be in this area. Its always a crap
shoot... I've spent a lot of time preparing for storms that totally passed
us by too.
