Hank,
Congratulations!
Your comment, “Ed, don't get carried away if it takes me awhile. I
have a full time job, 2 kids in elementary and I'm taking 2 > classes
towards my Masters.” I believe that I said about the boat, anticipate
taking at least a year… Once you get the boat to where you plan to work on
it just take your time and proceed forward.
This list has many good resource people willing to give you advice. Just
ask and evaluate the answers.
Now, let us get that boat home. Do you have a trailer? Is it a Rhodes 22
trailer?
Furthermore before you leave:
Make sure that the bearings are greased and that you check the grease
every 500 miles. I recommend doing like Elton and take an extra bearing
with you. There was a guy who spent more than the cost of a trailer
replacing a bearing towing a boat from New York City some years back.
Make sure tires are inflated to correct psi and carry a spare tire correctly
inflated with appropriate jack and blocks to support trailer if you need to
change tire.
Get at least one flat nylon tie down strap to secure the boat to the
trailer. I know Elton does not use these but the boat bounces less. A good
place to get one in Northern Tool.
Consider windage going across big bridges. I know Elton goes across the big
bridges, but he has been doing this a long time. I recommend NOT taking the
boat back across the Verrazano Bridge NOR the Delaware Memorial Bridges. If
there is any wind that day it is much greater at the apices of the bridges.
The object is to get you home with the boat in tow.
