The issue with the y valve and macerator pump is that you cannot pump
overboard within 3 mile of the coast or any inland body of water.  You
actually have to lock the y-valve closed from pumping overboard with either
a pad lock or a plastic cable tie.  If the coast guard boards you and you
don't havee that, it can be a hefty fine.

Another option to deal with waste is a lectrasan type 1 marine sanitation
device.  It uses the salt water and electrical current to treat the waste to
a point where it can be discharged.  If you sail in fresh or brackish water,
there is a device you can buy to add salt to the system for it to function
properly.  These can be used everywhere except in designated no discharge
zones.
