Slim,
That was forty years ago. Even then, anyone who persevered could do very well for themselves. Some had it harder than others but the objective of the Selma protests and the sacrifices of people like ML King were to remove the obsticle of institutional predjudice. What law in what state or federal statute stands in the way of any one race for them to achieve what they want in this country?
Is there no predjudice at all? As long as there are differences in the world, there will be predjudice. We discriminate in what we eat, who we know, what we like and don't like. It becomes odious when we use it to deny people an equal chance. We also hurt ourselves. If I don't like a particular race, and I don't hire him or I don't want to befriend him, I am the poorer for it. He might be the one who saves me money, saves my life or gives me a good tip on care and maintenence of my Rhodes22. If you don't learn this anywhere, you certainly learn it in the military. If I am at sea and I need assistance, I don't give a damn what the race of the individual is who helps and I will help any too. In the military we are all "green". I guess at sea, we are all "wet"?
