Robert,
Regarding The Surge, actually, I think The Surge is on schedule and
achieving it’s objectives regardless of what the Iraqi parliament does.
Remember, The Surge was dreamed up by the White House, so it needs to be
judged in a political context. What The Surge does is stall any US decision
regarding Iraq. We all understand that any decision re The Surge should be held
off until Sept, and then we’ll debate the results for maybe 3 months, to be
followed by modifications and improvements that will take at least 6 months
to implement and another 3 months to assess and debate, and then there will
be an election, and then - surprise, surprise - it will not be Mr Bush’s “
watch” any more. At that point it’s up to the next guy to figure out what to
do about Iraq. If Iraq ends badly, well Mr Bush warned us, he certainly wouldn
’t have handled things that way, and it’s the next Presidents fault. If
Iraq ends well, all praise to Mr Bush for staying the course through those
difficult times.
You don’t think this has occurred to the White House?
So The Stall is working, it’s on schedule, and it’s achieving its purpose;
it’s going to get Mr Bush et al off the hook. All they need is one more minor
iteration of The Surge and they're home free. I figure if they can make it
until about next Sept they're free; that's 12 1/2 months, where easily 3 to 4
months are tied up with the current Surge. I think they can do it.
In the meantime, all those soldiers getting blown up each day can take
solace in the knowledge that their sacrifice is good for the Republican National
Committee and Mr Bush et al's legacy - don’t deal with the problem, stall.
If this sounds cynical, just watch it evolve.
Dave
