First, the word is rappel, not repel. The gadget you're referring to is
called an ascender. It clips onto the line and slides up but won't slide
down because of its cam. Do a google search of "Jumar" or "Gibbs" and
you'll see it.
Slim, some experience in climbing and rappel.
