Alice,
I'm not sure what you mean by "getting up there." If the rip is close to
the triangular section that stays outside the mast, then that would imply
that the rip is low, not high on the sail. I would think a repair could be
done without removing the sail--unless I've misunderstood. A photo might
help...I mean a photo might help a sailmaker decide what to do. Take a shot
if you can and take the picture to a sailmaker. The photo will also help
with the insurance claim. Borrow a digital camera if you don't have one. I
think that's your next step. Good luck and keep us posted.
