You'll realize the problem immediately the first time you use 
it.  You either have to find a way to fasten the outlet tube in place 
(by tieing it to something) or use a longer tube.  I don't think it 
matters if you go over the transom or the side.

Yes, I grew up watching ospreys on the Delaware river in upstate 
NY.  Now, 40 years later, I'm still watch them on Lake Sinclair.  You 
may have missed the name announcement on the list a while back -

"My recently acquired R22 has just received her name - "Pandion", 
after the Ospreys that frequent our lake (Pandion haliaetus).  Like 
her namesake, she is swift, graceful, and dependent on wind and 
water.  Perfect!"
