also teaches you to appreciate good ethnic food. my wife and i used to live on east 5th street in a 5 floor walkup brownstone. the neighborhood was a mix of ukrainian, polish, italian, jewish, etc. you eat a lot of good stuff but keep in shape walking up and down stairs in the subway and the apartment. when we went to chicago to visit my daughter in college, we went to the polish neighborhood and bought bakery stuff, then to a little hole in the wall polish restaurant around the corner recommended by the bakery girl. mom and pop in the kitchen, daughter serves, 4 tables. great food.

Nothing like growing up in an Italian-Jewish-Polish neighborhood in NY.... I can cuss in three languages, appreciate lotsa different foods, and having been the youngest & smallest kid, some of the older guys took pity on me & taught me how to defend myself NY-style.

I was trying to come back to life and the kind folks on this list gave me latitude to do so.
