Stan settled on the current design with the batten at the sacrificial edge.
A similiar design has been put into use by sailmakers for other boats that
have IMF.
There is at least one other Rhodie out there who has verticle battens in an
old design IMF. That Rhodie has piped up on this forum. Maybe Art should
study the archives...
The new design is intended to increase the roach, which is normally much
larger in area in racing main sails of the standard main design.
Unfortunately, with the position of the back stays, the main sail size is
restricted. That way why of Roger P change his mast top crane to position
the stays further back. That allowed for even more roach.
Maybe Stan should change the standard mast top crane to have an arm about a
meter in legth toward aft so as to allow a new main sail similar to the ones
used in the America Cup races? Such a device would allow for more main sail
area without increasing mast height, imagine that.
