Any boat can be capsized if you work at it.
I have heard the story of the capsize Mary Lou mentioned from the Captain.
He does not post to this list and as far as I know still has his Rhodes 22.
He is a personal friend of Stan and is very experienced with boats.
It happened somewhere on Chesapeake Bay. He was out sailing and a storm was
coming quickly. He anchored in shallow water and went into the cabin to
wait out the very heavy rain. The anchor held, but he was in very shallow
water and the wind turned the boat sideways with the kick up rudder getting
stuck on the bottom. That made him broadside to the wind which was gusting
very strong (he said 50 to 60 mph at the time of the incident). It turtled
him and the spreaders got stuck in the mud. The captain and his crewmate
were stuck in the cabin for a short time because they had to figure out how
to break the cabin door out to get out, which they did. Apparently they
maintained radio usage because they called a boat towing company.
The Tow boat came to right him. The tow boat just tied a rope around the
mast and pulled. It did right the boat but bent the mast. The boat went
back to Edenton for a new mast. The boat and Captain were sailing the
Chesapeake again.
When anchoring in shallow water, raise the kick up part of the rudder. The
same should be said about the centerboard. He said that if he had raised
the kick part of the rudder, the boat would have simply turned to wind.
