[Rhodes22-list] Global Warming - Mike W, just go (Political reply) (Big Al may delete)

II went to a seminar yesterday by Roger Barry, Director of the National
Snow
and Ice Data center. He was not a very good speaker and his slides seem to
have been buried under the ice for some time, but there were a few points
that he made.

- There is a well documented 100,000 year glacial cycle, in addition to
several
shorter term cycles.

- There are also smaller ~10,000 year glacial cycles

- The causes of the various cycles are not all understood, although
orbital variations
can contribute. The fact that these cycles exist led scientists to
worry about the
sensitivity of the climate to relatively small stimuli.

- The snow and ice cover on Greenland represents about 7.5 m sea level
increase.
Antarctica 56.8 meters.

- Albedo (the reflectivity of snow and ice) plays a major role in the
climate system,
accelerating cooling and warming trends. Snow cover also plays a
significant
role in local climate, steering high level winds around the edges of the
pack.

- There is a significant amount of methane trapped in the permafrost.
Methane is a
much more effective greenhouse gas than C02.

I just found a very nice site from the American Institute of Physics:
http://www.aip.org/history/climate/
which puts the work in a historical context.
