[Rhodes22-list] Bottom Paint

Slim,
I use essentially the same technique. The biggest single difference is
that I don't use the jackstands available from West Marine. You can get
other jackstands that are open at the bottom of the tube. If you put a
bottle jack below the screw, you can effortlessly jack up the boat.
Wind the collar back down to the sleeve to hold the screw in place.
I use three or four of these jackstands. One at the bow with a "V" top.
I block the boat under the keel. This makes for a shorter wooden block
stack regardless of how high the boat is raised from the trailer.
With four jacks, and a little forethought, it is possible, and not
terribly difficult, to slide the trailer out from under the boat. This
involves moving stacks and jacks around the axles. The boat is really
easy to paint when the trailer isn't under it. It's easy to get to the
spots where the jackstands were after lowering the boat onto the trailer.
For safety reasons I'm more comfortable with the trailer under the
boat. However, in our boatyard most sailboats are left on jacks only,
six months of the year. Most of the boats are substantially larger than
ours.
Also, chaining the jacks together is highly recommended.
I prefer jacks that go straight up and down to angled jacks. The stern
of the R-22 is uncommonly flat for a sailboat, and lends itself to being
jacked straight up. The jacks with open tubes can be stacked for winter
storage.
