Rummy,
Same question: How many times have you sailed an R-22
with a wheel?? Come on up when it gets here & try it.
It won't change your mind, but may make you a bit less
against it. (maybe not...you may not fit between the
wheel & lazarette..;^))
Reread my response: I prefer tiller, but i don't sail
the way you do (no criticism). I want to get back on
the water. Period. The wheel will help me do that. I
have no one to sail with. Gotta be able to deal with
whatever comes up. Alone.
My choice was no boat (sailed an R-22 w/ a tiller & it
didn't work...tiller was in my way), or a boat w/a few
tradeoffs to get out on the water.
If you were faced with this seeming Hobson's choice,
would you sit on the dock & watch everyone sail away??
No contest. We deal the hand we've been dealt.
If I still had my guy to sail with, this discussion
would not even be happening: I'd still have the 34,
and my guy, and we'd be in the Abacos right now.
I don't need to defend my decision, and I'm sure this
will change no one's mind. It's a great boat w/ a
modification...And it's terrific that the boat sails
so great even though it was not designed for a wheel..
BTW.....I've sailed it for quite a long time on a
brisk day on Albemarle Sound...as I wasn't convinced
that it would work for me.
and BTW..I didn't put it on...it was already there.
Talk to the guy who did the original mod...
So live & let live & be happy that this boat can be
adapted to fiit the individual ways we we sail, rather
than vice-versa.
THAT's a great boat.

We can't change the angle of the wind....but we can adjust our sails.
