Subject: [Rhodes22-list] Mast Tabernacle Repair
Luis:
This is all fixable. If the wood in the cabin top is rotten or otherwise
compromised, then you need to fix that first. Captain Rummy has an article
about repairing decks that would be apropos.
Captain Rummys article suggests that all compromised material be removed
between the two layers of glass. It is my opinion that is not necessary,
but all should be dried out. Then determine the extent of the compromised
wood. If you are lucky, it will just around the screws where water seeped
in. If this is the case, I would not get into cutting a large square out
and putting in a new piece of wood, but would use penetrating epoxy or slow
curing epoxy and inject into the holes. This is accomplished by filling
each hole with the epoxy fluid then waiting for epoxy to creep/seep into
adjoining wood, then fill hole again and again. Small amounts of epoxy are
mixed until no more will go into hole. This could take all day. Wait 72
hours or manufacturers recommended time. Drill new holes for screws in
epoxy.
Again, others should make recommendations, and you should use method that
you are most comfortable with.
