[Rhodes22-list] Looking for Owners in New Jersey ?

Dan,
The Escape is too light duty. The V6 version is rated for 3500-lbs. If you were to consider an Explorer, give serious consideration to the V8, depending on the configuration, it is good for 6800-7500 lbs towing capacity. The real truth is that the only time you will see the difference between the 4.0L V6 and the 4.6L V8 is when driving around town, where the volume of the engine itself requires more fuel at idle. When you are actually using the engine to to pull the weight of the the vehicle, and the tow, it becomes less significant, and your fuel economy might even be better with the V8 because you won't need to go as deep into the throttle to keep up with traffic. Also, the Explorer (and Expedition) have independent rear suspension, which makes for a less truck-like ride.
Then there is the valid argument that says the longer the wheelbase, the safer the tow..... F150 Crew-Cabs and Super-Cabs are often well discounted. As others, have mentioned, if your Gross Combined Vehicle Weight is close to the vehicle's rated capacity, seriously consider adding a transmission oil cooler, if it isn't already installed as a factory option.
If you decide to go for a Ford contact me back channel, I have a couple of unused Friends & Family X-Plan discounts left for 07 Models.

Thanks Rob. I'll check what the NJ law is. I'd be driving on flat 95% of the
time and as per you I'd be moving it twice a year as well so may wing it.
How does the gas go on the Cherokee ? I know its better than some of the
SUV's. I am trying to figure out which is the best vehicle that can tow
5,000 Ilbs and still be reasonable on gas. Not an easy task. I was told
about the Ford Escape but not sure if it has a towing package. Dan
