Bob, Ed, Bill, Hnak, Rummy, etc.,
Thanks so much for the tips and recommendations. They are great! There
is a lot to work with here. I've been to Beaufort, SC several times and
it is a really nice quaint town. Never thought of sailing out of there
to get to Hilton Head, but that would be a fun trip. I'm going to look
into each one of them and start laying out options to my wife a
daughter. Even if we don't get down there in March, the ideas here are
the makings of some really nice trips.
If you have any other thoughts, keep 'em flowing!
Bill W.

Bill,
I already wrote a long message and then it went into cyber-space and is
lost
so I am re-writing. I hate when that happens. Anyway, I have made two
trips to Hilton Head with the Rhodes from Atlanta before I moved to the
Savannah area. One trip was from Savannah (Thunderbolt) and the other
from
Beaufort, SC. I first looked for a way to drive to HH and launch there
but
at the time there were no options and no place to leave car and trailer.
Art says that Palmetto Bay might now be an option. The Beaufort option
might be even better. The trip from Savannah and Beaufort is about the
same
distance (20nm) and takes about 4 hours, but from Savannah it is
motoring
through very narrow, winding parts of the ICW with no sailing and no
scenery. The trip from Beaufort is very nice - down the Beaufort River,
past Parris Island, across Port Royal Sound to Skull Creek - all of it
ICW
but most of it you can sail depending on the wind direction of course.
Lots
of dolphins and the sail across Port Royal Sound can be great - it's
still
one of my most memorable sails. I hear that Beaufort has a lot of nice
restaurants and sightseeing also, but have never done that.
Launching in Beafort is great because the downtown marina has a launch
ramp,
nice docks, parking for car & trailer, reasonable transiet dockage and
even
has an anchorage if you prefer that. Once you get to HH, since you are
with
your wife I would recommend spoiling her and staying at Harbour Town
Marina.
It is located just off Calibogue Sound and is at the 18th hole of the
Harbor Town golf links with the famous HH lighthouse. The marina is
expensive, ($2.75+/ft) but worth it, at least for a night. When I
stayed
they met us at the dock with a bottle of wine and they come out to your
boat
to pay for dockage so you don't even have to go into the office. Of
course,
Harbor Town is a great place in the spring and summer with all the bars
and
restaurants right there and it is usually jumping. After a night
there,
you could move to Palmetto Bay Marina off Broad Creek which is much
smaller,
low key, less expensive but also has some bars and restaurants there.
Another option is further up the creek to Shelter Cove Marina which I
believe is closer to more stores, bars restaurants, etc.
The sailing in Calibogue Sound is great and any of these marinas will be
very close to the sound.
Good luck
BK
