Thanks for your response.  In looking over the  mast raising  directions, one 
option is to attach the winch assembly to the bail on the  mast(as I recall) 
as opposed to the lower shrouds.  I've yet to figure out  where the bail on 
the mast is; I'd thought it might be what we're calling a pad  eye, but I guess 
not.  Clearly, the shrouds will work for me, but I'm  curious re the bail on 
the mast.  Any insight?
