[Rhodes22-list] spreaders

i just acquired a 1982 rhodes 22 that through the years the spreader bolt has been replaced. 
i seem to have a lot of slack in that the threads stop before able to tighten. i beefed up with
 washers but was wondering are the spreaders supposed to aim at an angle forward or use some kind of 
tapered washer to correct. 
mine has one built up washer...........?
