Dave,
I added the bail a couple seasons ago when we were doing more trailering and
raising and lowering the mast more often. With the bail, you don't use the
shrouds to connect to the crane so the shrouds stay connected to the boat
and as I said before, it's one less step to take. I recommend it if you're
doing a lot of trailering but if you only raise your mast once a season it's
not worth it.
I don't have a picture of it now but think of the bail on a fishing reel.
It's a heavy wire half circle that straddles the reel. The mast bail is
like that and is through bolted in the mast about 7 feet or so up from the
deck. It doesn't look like a pad eye.
