Dear Ed,
Thanks for the compliment and the chuckles. Great tongue-in-cheek humor re. Stan and customizing. I wouldn't get a new boat at this stage of life. Too much attached to the old one, & new Rhodes too expensive, "Stan said once that he couldn't afford a new one himself!!"
While CA middle aged son (51) is a better sailor than we, he claims the Rhodes is too small for the Pacific Coast sailing he does in rentals, like from Santa Cruz to Monterey Bay area so we shouldn't leave it to him if and when..
So we'll just sail along with our charts, compass, parallel rulers and a 9.9 electric start long shaft Johnson 2 stroke, enjoying Island camping, boat sleeping and life in general. We'll probably saell our '83 via Boating U.S. listing or back to Stan in another 5-10 years. I feel sorry for Stan that neither of his and Rose's sons are interested in the business.
All the best to you. and yours
Alan Robertson

Alan,
Your post about raising the mast puts this whole list in perspective. The
guys complaining and winning are half your age. Your boat must be as old as
Stan?
Have you considered getting a new boat with all the bells and whistles?
Then you could challenge Commodore Spitzer by saying he must build you a
motorized crane system. What other goodies would make this a go? Companion
way door could be a flat screen monitor hooked up to your GPS and computer
chart system so that you could see it from the tiller? Heated coffee cup
holder on tiller?
I am glad you are with us. About two years ago we had a contemporary of
Stan turn in his boat, he said he was getting too old to sail.

Addendum: "Communists and industrialists, tycoons and sailing bums, and
down to the last man, they are all great people. The sea is the great
equalizer. The challenge of the wind, water and the elements seems to bring
men closer and more equal than at any time in their lives. Ashore they are
different, but at sea they have to depend upon each other." George O'Day
