That's completely up to the candidates, and their parties. Again, there's nothing constitutionally preventing a candidate from naming his/her choice at whatever point they choose. However, most VP candidates start off wanting the presidency, then become a VP candidate after it's apparent they won't win the nomination of their party.

And again, Cheney was a glaring exception to that.

time will tell about what the next guy(?) does. what about selecting a running mate earlier in the process. we do judge the candidates on their marital status, morality, health, ect. why not pair them up before the primaries?
