Marc,
The standard length from old notes is 62' and I like a 7/16"  
diameter, although 3/8" is probably more widely used. If you're an  
active, all-weather sailor, I found a fuzzy braid has a better grip,  
especially without gloves. A recommendation is Trophy Braid from  
Samson, available at Defender Industries, see <http:// 
www.defender.com/product.jsp?path=-1|118|311417|314169&id=36393>. I'm  
sure there are all sorts of opinions, but to best judge try to get a  
sample from Samson. They were giving 1' sections out at the Annapolis
