Rummy,
Did I ever mention I personally had trouble tacking? Maybe your message was intended for neophyte Lee?
I agree completely with your suggestions below, and have been doing it for years. One exception would be in light airs when a slow tiller would retard even more , the necessary speed to complete the come about manouver.
But, Rik's advice about shortening the jib to get the center of effort more to the stern was a good point, and we haven't been doing it.
We even motor with the swing keel-centerboard down to reduce rolling somewhat. It works.

Big Al,
A couple of thoughts:
1) I would sail with the centerboard all the way down.
2) You don't throw the tiller over hard and fast. This scrubs hull speed.
Practice doing it several ways until you find the correct combination ( a good
feel ) for the wind and seas. There is a point where you can maintain maximum
hull speed and still bring the bow through the wind and waves.
3)Your inability to tack is a direct result of loss of hull speed. One of
the things many inexperienced sailors do is to let the genoa free either early
or to late. Again, timing is everything and you will get better with practice.
Practice makes perfect.
Rummy
