Michael,

Good luck with all your projects.

I'm no help with any of them but I can give you my opinion on #7, the
comfortable sitting position.

People swear by Stan's hiking seats. The reason I didn't get them for my
1986 Rhodes is that my stainless steel stern rail would need to be replaced
with a newer version that would accomodate the seats. I think a new stern
rail is over $2K. I assume your 1987 Rhodes has the old style stern rail.

I highly recommend getting the hiking stick, but not because I steer with
it.

When I'm actively sailing and actually steering the boat, I'm usually
standing with the tiller between my legs. I find that it's easier to steer
with your legs and it leaves your hands free for other things like holding a
beer.

When I'm actively sailing and sitting, I don't normally lean against the
coamings but sit close enough to the tiller to reach it without the hiking
stick. You can always put pillows behind your back if you'd like to lean
against something.

The reason I highly recommend the hiking stick is because of the tiller
lock. I mostly sail with the tiller locked in place on cruise control. I
have the old style tiller lock which is a broom handle holder attached to
the forward vertical sections on both sides of the stern rail. The new
style locks the handle in a recessed compartment cut into the coaming seat
backs. I think it's probably better because it's out of the way and allows
for more movement of the tiller extension without switching sides, but does
require that you cut a big hole in your boat.
