What I was going to suggest was a 'boot' that starts
at the front of the mast, comes around each side,
engulfs the gooseneck & the gathered sail, and cinches
@ 12-18" from the front of the main.

I would suggest using zippers w/flap top & bottom, and
a cinch on top and bottom of mast opening, & around
the main. 

In a pinch, you could cinch with bungees.
