Thanks for your experienced eye.  I regret not having a seasoned sailor with me to point out things that others often miss.
 
By release, do you mean that one should secure the topping lift when the boom is a few degrees beyond perpendicular to the mast, say 95 degrees?

Just a casual observation, but you need to release the topping lift next  
time you go out.
