I didn't realize that slightly below horizontal was the ideal. Please don't hesitate to post common sense. This Rhodie only has a small reservw of that stuff.

OK, I need a breather - move over Rummy:
Most everything on the Rhodes can be figured out by Rhodies because all it
takes is common sense and we all know from all the postings, that is one
thing every Rhodie has
One of the things we want the main sheet to do is adjust sail shape. So we
pull on the boom and that in turn pulls on the sail. If the boom were
being help up by the topping lift, we would, in effect, not be pulling not
on the sail but on the topping lift and sail shape would not change. (And
you blamed losing that last race, on the boat.)
So, when under sail, put enough slack in the topping lift line so you don't
get into a tug of war with the topping lift when trying to set your main
sail. When sailing you do not need the topping lift because the sail is
supporting the boom.
Of course your common sense is going to tell you that just before you put
the sail away you should take the slack out of the topping lift. The
quickest way to explain the topping lift's job in life to guests not getting
it, is to have them stand under the boom and put the sail away without
re-setting the topping lift.
While I am diverted, as an aside, when you do put an IMF away, the boom
should be slightly below horizontal. The higher you have the topping lift
hold the boom above horizontal, the more likely you will bunch the sail up
inside the mast and be calling me in the morning.
and, as Chris Mathews says, "tell me something I don't know".

Rummy,
Thanks for your experienced eye. I regret not having a seasoned sailor with
me to point out things that others often miss.
