Bob,
  If your boat and cabin hatch is set up like the rest of ours, lay the hatch FLAT on the deck floor with the hinge lengthwise to the boat, i.e. fore and aft.

  You will notice that the hinge does not divide the hatch equally through the middle; there is a short "half" and a longer "half" with the width of the hatch being the same. 
With the hatch still flat, if the short part is not facing the port side, turn the whole hatch around 180 degrees so it does. Make sure the length side of the hatch is right up against the cabin bulkhead.
Start sliding the hatch, still flat, underneath the port seat towards the side of the boast.
Just before it hits the side, reach in and start tipping up the short side of the hatch cover so it fits in a space in back of the side of the seat and will extend upwards all the way to where it meets the gunwale where the jib track is mounted..
If done correctly you should wind up with the short "half "of the hatch cover fitted underneath and behind the seat, sticking upwards  and making a right angle at the point of the hinge with the wide "half" of the hatch underneath the seat - it just fits and the slightly raised corregated part of the deck sole holds it in place.

By the way, if you have a lock hasp on the outside of your hatch, be sure it is facing upwards as you slide the hatch under the seat or it will scratch and chip your gel coat.

  I have also tried to store the hatch this way but I obviously do not know what you guys are talking about.  I really need a better place than the lazarette b/c on a cruise it is usually full.  Can you explain it better to me, like I'm a dumb ass? 

  What do you mean by putting the short side up?  Is it folded when you shove it under the seat?  Are the hinges up or down?  Is it forward of the coaming compartment - as far forward as possible?  Where is this mysterious slot that supposedly hold it in place?  HELP.  I can't figure this one out and everytime I hear another description it seems to be different than the previous one.  Do I need a decoder ring from GB?  Maybe I need in-boat service and a bottle or two of rum?
