Today is the anniversary day of what?  Hint: it took place at Kill
Devil Hills.  2nd hint:  the original event was 2/3rds the length of
the machine I make a living in.  3rd hint - the inventors went back to
making bicycles and never realized a profit on their invention (and
damn few others have as well in the last 105 years).

What did they patent?
