Speaking of catching fire on their own, we had that experience once with 
an old rag we had used to apply linseed oil onto some wood.  Luckily we 
were there and noticed it when it burst into flames.
Always hang up rags so plenty of air can circulate, or else as 
suggested, burn them before they burn themselves or you.
