Sounds like we're on the same page Ron about sailing and trailering on Champlain.
No, when there were visitors we'd take them to :
1 - The Hyde Park Wollen Mill Store
2. The NE Culinary Institute in Montpelier
3. Canoeing on Lake Elmore or the Lamoille River
4. The Fox Fire Restaurant in N. Stowe or the Blue Moon in the Village
5. The Flynn theater in Burlington
 6. In winter on the 6 mile Stowe hiking, X-Co skiing and hiking trail which started in back of Stowe Community Church.

By the way, did you or the family ever listen to Ken Squires Sat. Morning radio program from Waterbury "Music to Go to the Dump By?" I think it was on 650 AM radio?

  Al and Caroline,

Al, Nice to meet another who whenever out of town guests arrived had to make the trip to Waterbury and Ben & Jerry's.Yes, Lake Champlain can get nasty. I sailed mostly the northern part of the Lake. Remember Juniper Island? Our daughter graduated from Stowe H.S. in 99 and two years later we left VT.

Caroline, I agree with Al's evaluation and opinion as to a fixed keel sailboat with a heavy keel being more appropriate when weather kicks up. But, this presents problems as far as launching from a trailer and stability when trailering on the highway. If you are looking for an easily trailerable boat with ease of launching and retrievable as well as stability under sail you cant go wrong with the R-22. I believe as sailors we should always be aware of weather conditions and sail or decide not to sail accordingly based upon our sailing skills as well as the limitations of the boat.

May your sails always be filled with wind,

  >>ron<<

    Hi Ron,
As one who has sailed N. Lake Champlain as I gather from your reply to Carolins Yavetz, would you comment on my observations below to her and me? We've only crewed with others on Champlain and not in a Rhodes, so your advice, to her if contradictory to mine, would be most accurate and I would tell her so my self.
By the way we are Summer ex-patriates from Morrisville (80's & 90's) where our daughter and family lived. Know the Stowe area and back roads very well. Where did you launch from??

We've been sailing and camping with our Rhodes on Lake George NY for over 20 years. We know of strong gusts that occur on Lake Champlain which require extreme caution, particularly re. too much jib which causes fast excessive heeling; all Rhodes are virtually unsinkable however. As Champlain narrows past the Crown Point Bridge, wind velocities increase because of the "venturi effect." Not as bad around Grand Isle -N. Burlington area. Wind direction more steady.
Nevertheless, as a loyal Rhodes owner and we feel it is ideal for comfort cruising, if it were me, I'd strongly consider a fixed keel Tanzer '22 if you can find one. This would require a high aspect trailer however. Which may be a negative. I think Tanzers may currently out of production, best check.

      Hi,

After having done some research, I am seriously considering purchasing a trailerable cruising sailboat for use on Lake Champlain. Coming from a family of daysailers and serious small boat racers, (not cruisers), this is a rather big transition, and I want to make sure I find a boat that I can be comfortable in as well as proud of sailing. A used or recycled Rhodes 22 is at the top of my short-list. But living abroad most of the year, I have only been able to do my initial research on the internet. However, I will be visiting my parents near Sarasota, Florida in a couple of weeks and will spend part of the time looking at boats. I've written Stan, and he recommended that I contact this group. I would love to know if there are any avid Rhodes owners near Sarasota or in upstate NY. And also if there are any used Rhodes for sale near Lake Champlain.

      Thanks, Caroline
