Thank you, John, for giving this some thought.
In the spirit of this group's bar room round
table discussions, I have interspersed my
responses among your statements.

This is a good thing.

I would not contemplate for a minute,
and certainly not publicly suggest,
any action that would fragment this
harmonious and cohesive group,
especially in consideration of its
concentrated and collective persuit of
its well-defined, narrowly focussed,
and commonly agreed-upon goals.

I wasn't talking about any capability
except file sharing.

Of course. More about that later.

Good.

In a prior incarnation, I managed a
company's IT resources, and had similar
concerns about the polution of common
file space. I set up a couple of
directories for shared files:

TRANSITORY - anyone could add a file
for common access, but it was
automatically deleted at the end of 7
days. Here, we might allow 3-5 weeks
so someone on vacation would have a
chance to download it before it staled
out.

ARCHIVAL - Rather than John (or back-up
administrator) having to moderate the
addition of each file, any list member
could request that a file in the
transitory directory be promoted to the
Archives. Soch a request would occur
some reasonable time before the file is
to be autodeleted, and include the file
name and descriptive text to accompany
it into the Archive.

Hope this tickles the little gray cells,
